$40,000 in credit card debt

I’m new here and in desperate need of some advice. My husband and I have about $40,000 in credit card debt. My husband primarily has a good paying job, but recently work has slowed with the possibility of a lay off coming up that could last until April. Even with him working, during this slow time the money he normally makes isn’t there and his monthly income is only enough to keep our important bills paid, such as home, cars, utilities, food, etc…

So, our numerous credit cards are having to take a back seat to not being paid. I’m doing what I can by paying some of the credit cards with smaller debt on them, but we have a few cards with larger debt that I know I won’t even get around to even considering paying anything until at least April. The constant calling from these companies day after day is enough to drive me absolutely insane. I’m hoping that once my husband gets back to working and making some decent money in a few months we can work on getting things back on track, or if not we will probably be looking at chapter 13 at that point. I guess for now I’m just looking for any kind of options I haven’t thought of and is there any way to get these calls to taper off in the meantime? I know I’m probably asking and hoping for the impossible, but I just don’t know what to do at this point.

This is what I did: i called all of my creditors and explained the situation not all of them were sympathetic to us. I paid the necessities and mailed a check for 10.00 to everone else until we were able to resume min. payments. Most people would disagree with this but that is all we had and I figured something was better than nothing….I also NEVER let them pressure me into agreeing to an amount we did not have. I hope this helps…
